It's really hard to get myself to do math!
Because I'm doing math online, I have the ability to pick when I do my lessons and where and if I fall behind, nobody really notices or creates a punishment. This means I need to really work hard to keep myself motivated enough to stay on track. Here are some patterns and techniques I've noticed happening when I need to do math.
- I get sidetracked when I'm in a lesson by something else I need to do, because nobody is making me stay on task and I do lessons at home.
- I am VERY easily sidetracked, so when I'm in a math lesson I either talk myself into staying on task, kind of like how you'd talk to a toddler ("Doing math is important too, so let's stay focused on this lesson and we can do that other thing later!"), or I use the other thing I want to get done as a reward ("Okay, you can go brush your hair once you finish 3 more questions!).
- I get distracted by texts and snapchats and other notifications.
- I know that eliminating my phone would make me super miserable and I'd probably never do math again, so instead I use that as another reward (I can only respond to a text after I complete a problem, and no more than sending one text.)
- I get really energetic/wiggly.
- So far, I haven't found much of a solution for this. Sometimes I use hulahooping as a reward/break, which helps a bit.
Other strategies:
- I start off with a reward. Today's one was that I got a lollipop for math, but if I got sidetracked I couldn't continue to have the lollipop.
- I created a schedule for myself this week because of how behind I am, and I am finding myself motivated to get ahead of my own schedule.
- I have created a consequence for not getting back on track enough- Michelle will make me a calendar (that I probably won't follow but it will still exist?). I really hate Michelle's planning and calendar situation, so I kind of want to catch up just so that she can't make me a calendar.
