Parenting Mazes

Friday, it was about 2 degrees out and the snow was up to around my knees. My animals hate the snow- the dogs are both too short to walk through it, it's too powdery for the cat, and the goats don't enjoy being cold or wet. We have a path shoveled up to the goat shed, and another over to the garage, which allows the dogs (and Alex the cat) a little room, but not much. The goats have stayed inside the "barn" the past few days and are a little depressed.

Anyway, it was freezing Friday, but I tossed on snowpants (and, you know, a coat and other winter stuff?) and grabbed a shovel anyway. I didn't have school (midterms!) so I spent maybe around an hour freezing my nose off while shoveling a maze in our backyard. It's pretty big, covering a lot of the hill, and connects up to the goat run. I let the girls out, and they were maybe the happiest I've seen them. I went to the end of my maze to try to see who'd come to me first. The answer is none, because goats don't really work like that, but it was good enrichment anyway. Cedar and Violet were so happy to have room run and play again, and Mayhem and Chaos (my littlest ones, and a much bouncier breed) chose to ignore maze rules and jump over, and into, walls. Sometimes when it gets really cold, I find it hard to remember why I love having these animals. They're a lot of work, and milking at -14* is not one of my favorite things. Moments like these, where I can remember that I love working to make them happy, because that's what makes me happy, are the best.

I had such a great time building a maze for the goats that I figured I'd make another in the front yard for Charlie. She's on an invisible fence, because she's a little squirrel hunter, so she couldn't reach the one for the goats. I was out at 8:30 pm, at 0* digging paths in front of the house. The worst part? Charlie is a little ungrateful brat and hasn't even really played in it! I can't believe I raised her. It's a really cool maze too! At least she's cute.

Anyway, moral of the story is that I'm a total mom and have raised children that don't appreciate mazes.
