The Brilliant Death- AR. Capetta
Y'all know I'm not really a fantasy gal, but uhhh The Brilliant Death was a good book.
This is very spoilery but still read it I promise you won't understand most of my gibberish anyway.
Alright, so our main character is Teodora DiSangro. Her father is some sort of Very Important Man. Also, I think this happens in a time that is not now? Like, earlier, except I don't know how far back because my sense of history is awful. In whatever world and time period we're in, magic is bad. Ew, no magic. Scary. Awful. Witch. Okay, so obviously Teodora is magical because duh, conflict and plot and fun magic fantasy yay. Her magic skill thing is turning things into other things. Teodora uses it to change evil men into items, and also sometimes just to swap items about.
Her father gets killed by some magic letter thing sent by Evil Guy. Apparently other Important Men have been killed. The oldest son in each family must go report to Evil Guy to be an Important Man in his fathers place. Teodora turns her older evil brother into an owl, and then takes her youngest brother on a journey to Evil Man's village. Also, she's met this boy that she later runs into again, but they are in girl form now. She's pretty confused about that.
Her youngest brother gets killed by the owl that was their evil older brother. Genderfluid shapeshifter human and her bond. They are both magic. Cielo (genderfluid shapeshifter) agrees to come on this journey, and also to teach Teodora more magic things. They kiss? Cielo teaches Teodora how to turn herself into a boy, so she can go be the oldest son and report to that evil guy.
Lots of other things happen.
Okay listen honestly I didn't really care about the rest of the plot. It's very good though, and you should just read it for yourself if you're into fantasy. I was mostly here for the cute queer witch relationship. But the book was really good! Great plot. I promise.
Also, the author lives in Montpelier with her partner and the actual cutest little nerd kid ever and I'm obsessed.
