Afterworlds- S. Westerfeld

It's finally time for another edition of "What's Delilah Been Reading?"! After reading approximately 1 book in 3 months, Librarian Lisa knocked some sense into me and I finished 3 books over break. To quickly talk about the other two:
Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introverts Story- D. Tung
This one's a small little graphic novel! It's short, but adorable and was nicely relatable, though straighter than I was hoping for.

(Don't) Call Me Crazy- 33 Voices Start the Conversation about Mental Health- K. Jensen
This was a collection of pieces from different authors about their experiences with mental health. Some parts were kind of boring, and I think it needed more poetry. The main reason I read it was because Adam Silvera had a piece in it. His piece was amazing. I love Adam Silvera. Also, the rest was pretty good.

But! Back to the point. I was so desperate to start reading again that I took whatever Lisa recommended and just went in and started reading. No doubts, no complaints. Okay, minimal doubts and complaints. This was not a very good decision.

Listen. This book was so bad that I had to binge read all 600 pages in one day to get it over with. This meant that quite a few things on my to do list did not get done. Also, the book sucked. Here's why:

Scott Westerfeld is a terrible writer.

Also, okay. Okay. Settle in. Here we go. Basically, he's writing this book about this girl named Darcy, and Darcy is writing a book about this girl named Lizzie. The chapters alternate between Darcy's life and the story she's writing. Darcy's book gets published and she moves to NYC to do exciting author things instead of college. Darcy is only 18 but does a lot of underage drinking like a pro. She meets lots of authors and makes a friend and then, new writer friend kisses her on the roof of her new beautiful NYC apartment. I mean, I skipped a few plot points, but yeah. Oh also new writer friend is female and it's,,, pretty gay.

Meanwhile (very fictional) Lizzie is like, having near death experiences because terrorists, and then she's making out with a hindu death god the first time she meets him. Also she can see ghosts now. Also, his touch is "electrifying" and he "gives off sparks" and "muscles" and "tall and handsome" and also like,,, 4000 year old death god that looks 17. Also Lizzie is now kinda besties with this 11 year old ghost from the 1950s ish.

Okay, but now Darcy is having author crises and also has low key moved in with this older gay new writer friend and they're like, kinda living with each other, even though I feel like this is moving too fast. They go on tour? And then more writer things happen. Unfortunately, older gay new writer friend is not a death god and she does not give off sparks.

Meanwhile, Lizzie is making a real mess over in the afterlife or whatever. She's just,,, really not minding her own business. Some things happen and hot death god and her argue. Also, she kills an old man by sitting on him. So, yeah.

Darcy and older gay new writer girl break up because uhhh, stress and young and arguments. Darcy starts writing a sequel.

Okay and suddenly Lizzie is in the middle of a war and idk where that came from? Literally I couldn't follow the plot at this point. I really don't know what happened.

I think at the end Darcy and love interest get back together and I'm like 98% sure that Lizzie's story probably ends with either a kiss or something over dramatic?

600 pages of failing lesbian teen writer romance and angsty hot death god.

Ugh.
