The First Day of School (Bella Edition)

So… the first day of high school. I mean it was okay, and I think that the whole purpose of it sort of worked (to get oriented to the space), but to be honest it really wasn’t that great. It was 96 degrees all day and being stuck in a non-air conditioned school with hundreds of other confused, hot freshman really sucks. In the morning, we started off by filing into the gym and playing a GIANT group game of rock, paper, scissors. I don’t know what the principal was thinking with that one but it happened so…? After this kid named Sam won the rock, paper, scissors thing, we were arranged into smaller groups and proceeded to play awkward “get to know each other” games. After all of the games were done, my group walked down to a room at the very end of the school and were told that we were going to hike Mt. Mansfield. I’m sure you can imagine our excitement. Before we went hiking, we previewed our A day and B day schedules and then had lunch. Of course there were boys and girls tables and popular people and non-popular people’s tables which was to be expected but definitely worse than imagined. And to add on to that, the lunch room temperature rose from about 96 degrees to 103 degrees in less than two minutes. Fun, fun!

After lunch, we went to try and figure out our lockers and after about a gazillion tries of trying to open it, mine remained a closed sesame. Then this kid eventually came over and helped me. He unlocked it on the first try. Unfortunately they are NOT big enough to hide in. Then came the hike and since most of us were already dripping sweat, there wasn’t much of a change. Luckily, we did not hike all the way up to Mt. Mansfield’s peak, only to a small cabin with a nice view along the way. The big group kind of split up into smaller groups as we went on and I ended up hiking with THE TWO BEST TEACHERS IN THE SCHOOL, Mr. Rufenod and Ms. Parker! That was probably the only good part of the day. Anyways… when we got back from the hike, we were all sweaty, tired, overheated, and probably dehydrated. MMU hosted a BBQ for the freshies but I was too hot, sticky, and peopled out to stay.

So that was my first official day at MMU and I’m definitely feeling a little better about the never ending hallways. I only walked into two in-session classes today! YES, new lowest record! I’m hoping that things will settle down a bit and that I can get into some sort of routine throughout the year. Yes, yes… okay Emmitt you can now call us the stinky high schoolers. This day on a scale of 1-10… I would say a 4. Hopefully it’ll improve.
